DOE Announces Up to $23M Funding for Biomass and Waste-Based Chemical and Fuel R&D
The funding aims to drive research and innovation in the development of domestic chemicals and fuels derived from biomass and waste resources.
The U.S. Department of Energy's Bioenergy Technologies Office (BETO) has announced up to $23 million in funding to advance research and development of renewable chemicals and fuels from biomass and waste resources.
This initiative, known as the Sustainable Propane and Renewable Chemicals (SPARC) Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO), aims to enhance the U.S. bioeconomy by supporting innovative technology pathways for affordable fuels and products.

The SPARC NOFO focuses on two main areas:
- Bio-based Chemicals
- Bio-based Propane/LPG
BETO plans to award multiple cooperative agreements, each lasting approximately three years. Concept papers are due by March 14, 2025, and full applications by May 30, 2025. An informational webinar is scheduled for January 22, 2025.
